Link: Fear and Overreaction
Was reading this and thinking about planning for an upcoming climb attempt of Mt. Baker with my Boy Scout Venture Crew I help out with.
There was recently a tragic and fatal avalanche on Mt. Rainier. Parents are concerned as Mt. Baker has also been issued an avalanche warning – which we are of course heeding.
I think some natural disasters our natural instincts are surprisingly good at. If a cliff or ledge looks dangerous to precarious, it is! Listen to your fear, but don’t let it make decisions for you. If you are properly informed, trained, roped up, and prepared, you can do dangerous things safely.
And somethings there is no preparation for – I am not aware of a way to avoid an avalanche other than not be there when the risk of avalanche is high.
